New NHS unit to oversee digital transformation
A new organisation is being created to drive forward the adoption of digital technology in the NHS. Christened NHSX, it will provide leadership on national policy “both by working with industry and via its own prototyping and development capability”. Its chief executive will have strategic responsibility for directing technological development and will be accountable to the health secretary and chief executives of NHS England and NHS Improvement.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock has made a point of championing technological solutions to many of the challenges facing the NHS. Announcing the initiative, he said “NHSX will combine some of the best minds from among the NHS, leading innovators, and government into one unit to set national policy, remove red tape and create a culture of innovation to allow the best innovations to flourish”.
